Trace elements in the right form.
The requirement for micronutrients ranges from grams to a few kilograms per hectare. Whether it is met depends less on the total content in the soil than on availability: pH, lime content, humus and water balance determine whether iron, manganese, zinc or boron are present in a form plants can take up.
Sulphates and nitrates are water-soluble, quickly available and the standard form for soil and blended fertilisers. Chelates such as EDTA, DTPA and EDDHA keep the element in solution even at high pH and are used for foliar application, fertigation and liquid formulations. Crop, site and application technique determine which form makes sense in the formulation.
