Secondary nutrients
More than trace elements, less than primary nutrients.
Plants need sulphur, calcium and magnesium in quantities that lie between the trace elements and the primary nutrients. Each of the three behaves differently: sulphur and calcium are hardly translocated within the plant, so a deficiency first affects young leaves, fruits and shoot tips. Magnesium, by contrast, is mobile; here the older leaves show chlorosis first.
This determines fertilisation. Elemental sulphur is slowly converted to sulphate in the soil and acts as a depot over the season. Calcium and magnesium nitrates are immediately available and also supply nitrate nitrogen; magnesium sulphate covers magnesium and sulphur at the same time.

Granulated elemental sulphur with bentonite is oxidised microbially in the soil and gradually becomes available to plants. Application with standard spreading equipment, also as a component in blended fertilisers. Wigor® S+B combines sulphur and boron in one granule, for oilseed rape with its high sulphur and boron requirement and for boron-demanding crops such as sugar beet. Suspensions for liquid application.
